Abstract

Objective: To differentiate serum level of vitamin D  between asthmatic and non asthmatic children and its relationship with corticosteroid use in the age group of   6 years to 14 years.


Methods: This hospital based Cross sectional case control Study was done on 140 children. Venous blood was obtained for vitamin D estimation.


Results: The blood sample showed significant difference (p < 0.00001) in serum vitamin D level between asthmatics and non-asthmatics children. Children using corticosteroid have lower levels of vitamin D than those not using corticosteroid. There exist a strong positive correlation between vitamin D & FEV1 (Pearson correlation coefficient = 0.9373) and vitamin D & PEFR (Pearson correlation coefficient = 0.9525). But there is a strong negative correlation between vitamin D and total IgE level (Pearson correlation coefficient= -0.7574) 


Conclusion:1) There were lower mean serum Vitamin D levels in asthmatic children than that of the healthy children. 2) There were lower mean serum Vitamin D levels in Corticosteroid using asthmatic children than that of the Corticosteroid not-using asthmatic children.
